The rate at which begging children and teenagers are increasing on the streets of Lagos is so sad.
These children and teenagers suffer several types of abuse including sexual abuse.
I recall a 12year old boy in Lagos who was begging and was introduced to thugs and went into social vices. After a while they were arrested by police and jailed.
Some parents are not careful and they forget that sending their children to the streets to beg is very dangerous because sexual abusers are everywhere.
Some children have died, had accidents and have become physically and sexually abused due to begging.
Some evil people use children on the streets to perpertrate their wicked acts.
Dear parents, leaving your children in the streets of Lagos or any other state to beg is exposing them to danger.
It is also not a good training culture. Begging limits a child’s capacity because it teaches the child to be dependent on people instead and be lazy.
It is true that some parents undergo financial issues. That is why they send their children to beg, A better approach is to train them to work at their level to support you while you supervise.
It doesn’t have to be a difficult job. But teach them to work or learn skills or even handwork instead of begging.
I recall a story of a highly successful man who naratted how he suffered as a child due to financial issues.
However, he said his mum played a major role because as a child she taught him to work, to be accountable and honest. His mum insisted that he followed her everytime to the market to work.
Today he is a successful millionaire.
If the mum introduced him to begging on the street, he wouldn’t have ended successful.
The government has a role to play to in preventing abuse by appointing child safety supervisors to look into the numerous begging children and teenagers in the street of Lagos.
This is because these children are more at risk of being abused daily.
If there is a structured scheme prepared by government to address this issue, there will be less begging children on the streets and hence reduced cases of abuse.
